Metal caskets are made of bronze, copper, stainless steel or standard steel. Steel is a ferrous metal and is measured in gauge with the thinnest steel being 20 gauge (1/20th of an inch), followed by 18 gauge (1/18th of an inch) and 16 gauge (1/16th of an inch). The lower the gauge number the thicker the steel. Bronze, copper and stainless steel have properties that inhibit rust.
Each metal casket listed will have a description of gasketed or non-gasketed. Gasketed caskets have a rubber seal between the top and bottom lid which is designed to resist the entrance of air, water and other graveside elements. Wood and non-gasketed caskets are protected when placed in a sealed vault.
